Fasting, Sleeping all day and the added stress of quarantine has played havoc with our metabolism over the past one month. While fasting in itself is fantastic for the body, this Ramadan has been hectic and particularly depleting for all of us. However, now that we are somewhat used to life under lockdown, let’s focus on rebuilding our body and mind from the inside out. Here are my tried and tested methods to reset your metabolism and ditch the post-fasting bloat. 1. Now that we are no longer fasting, it is still crucial to watch portions. Especially since eating out of boredom is so common. Try to build a new eating regime focusing on understanding portion sizes and only eating when hungry. Use your hand to indicate the ideal amount of your macro-nutrients at each meal: a portion of protein equals to the size of your palm; carbohydrates (pasta, rice, bread) the size of a clenched fist; as much fruits and vegetables as you can fit in one cupped hand; and fat that is equivalent to a quarter of your thumb! 2. Snack on nutritionally balanced items that pack healthy fats, quality protein and good carbs in each bite. This combination is essential to banish hunger pangs and moderate your appetite. For eg. a handful of almonds with 2 tablespoons of Greek yogurt, an apple with 6 walnuts, a Shami kebab with a thumb-sized block of cottage cheese4. Sometimes, we mistake hunger for thirst. So make sure you drink water before the meal and are drinking at least 12 to 16 glasses throughout the day. Water naturally cleanses your body, boosts your metabolism and is essential for glowing skin! 5. Try to eat your calories instead of drinking them. A milk shake is packed with sugar as is a fruit juice. When you drink your calories, it leads to an instant spike in blood sugar levels which then contributes to unstable insulin levels. To lose weight and keep it off, it’s essential to stabilise insulin levels. 6. Be like the French. Eat intuitively and stop when full. Taste everything to satisfy the craving and don’t feel guilty about it. As an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, I hate the concept of the ‘cheat meal’ because it implies that all other meals are boring. Nutrition is deeply linked to gratification: when you start enjoying each meal and indulging in quality cuisine, your body does not crave junk. Even so, if you want to taste a cupcake, do it. Food is not the enemy, over-eating is! 7. Exercise is key to resetting your metabolism, building lean muscle and strengthening your bones. But it does not have to be taxing. Find an activity you like doing and stick to it three to four times a week. From dance to walking to swimming, anything works! Consistency is more important than the type of exercise. So pick something that does not feel like a punishment and start moving today! 8. Finally, fix your sleeping patterns. When you go against the natural order of things by sleeping all day and staying up at night, you unknowingly prevent your body from functionally optimally. It’s known as the circadian rhythm and fixing it is the key to weight loss, hormonal health and proper physical and mental recovery.
