If you have already watched several video tutorials that have amazing ideas about organizing your fridge and still have not been able to reach a satisfactory level, it is because they all are majorly based on foreign kitchens and refrigerators. Pakistani kitchens function at a very different level and hence maintaining them is also a unique task. We share few hacks that will organize your fridge magically. As a starter, here’s a bonus tip: Use a mixture of lemon and vinegar every week for a day to get rid of the damp smell!

Place foods that need more cooling at the back

But, to organize your fridge in a better way, you first need to understand its functionality. Every shelf in your fridge has air dispensers to maintain the temperature hence the back space of every shelf is the coldest area. Push foods that need more cooling than others at the back and keep the ones that need lesser cooling towards the edge of the shelf.

Use airtight plastic bags as organizers

Many of us like to store dry fruits, dry lentils (chana dal etc.), desiccated coconut etc., in fridge to increase their shelf life. Store all these items in airtight plastic fridge bags to save on space.
Useful tip: Mix all ingredients used to prepare a chutney and put it in one bag to refrigerate. It saves time and effort when you actually plan to prepare it.

Use shelf liners instead of place mats

Lot of us use place mats to avoid shelves from getting soiled but either the back of the shelf or the front edges get dirty calling for deep cleaning. To avoid this, use shelf liners. You can cut them according to the size of the shelf which avoids making the edges dirty further increasing your work.

Use tray baskets for chilies and lemons

Most of us wrap up chilies and lemons in a plastic bag and stuff it in the vegetable basket. Since they are often used in Indian cooking and we need quick access to them all the time, it is better to organize them in small tray baskets.

Use trays for organizing jars
Instead of jumbling up the jars and glass containers all over your fridge; try to line them up together in organizing baskets. This makes it easier for you to look for them and there will be fewer chances of them falling over other containers while being pushed behind.

Use cling sheets to cover instead of using plates

Pakistani households have a habit of covering containers with plates and over-sized lids. The over-sized lids or plates occupy extra space which reduces the space available for more things. If the containers don’t have a lid of its size, you can use cling sheets to cover it. Cling sheets are also a great way to cover half-cut fruits or meats to be stored in fridge.
