“Noor” Gets Major Win at Cannes!
Pakistan’s film industry continues to make its mark on the global map in 2023. Noor, directed by Umer Adil and launched on the OTT platform See Prime, has won “Best Health Film” award in the January online edition of Cannes World Film Festival. ‘Noor,’ which tackles the stigma around weak eyesight, is scripted by Farah Usman, and stars Sarwat Gilani, Omair Rana, Tanisha Shameem, Mizna Waqas and Tasneem Ansari in pivotal roles.
TIME’s women of the year list included Pakistan’s climate defender Aiysha Siddiqa. Coming from a tribal community in Northern Pakistan, Siddiqa became a climate and human rights defender after being a personal victim of climate change. She realized at the age of 14 that the environment around her is not safe. Siddiqa is considered a potent voice in Climate change activism. Last year, she also addressed the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP27) in Sharm El-Sheikh Egypt and shared her poem “So much about your sustainability, my people are dying.” As a climate sustainability worker, she started her activism at the age of 16 and for 24 years she has been highlighting the impact of climate change problems occurring all around the world with special emphasis on the least-income countries that are bearing the major brunt of climate change.
“Acting Class,” by Nick Drnaso
In his graphic novels, Drnaso draws in a flat, almost affectless style, as if the narratives were playing out through an opioid haze. His deceptively simple panels and dense but readable page layouts sometimes make it seem as if his characters are slipping into one another, their very identities destabilizing before us. “Acting Class” makes remarkable narrative use of those aesthetic qualities, with its story of a group of strangers and casual acquaintances who set out to find themselves — only to discover that they might be other people altogether.
