Boy’s 20 Million Year Old Discovery
W e’d seen fragments of shark teeth on the beach, but nothing as big and heavy as this. A six-year-old boy has found a tooth belonging to a massive prehistoric shark which could be up to 20 million years old. Sammy discovered the 10cm-long (4in) tooth on a beach with his dad Peter while on holiday in Suffolk, England.Dwarfing other sea creatures, scientists estimate the Megalodon shark could grow up to a staggering 18m (60ft) in length, and weigh up to 60 tonnes.
Evolutionary biologist Professor Ben Garrod, who confirmed the lucky find, said the Megalodon was an “ambush hunter” and that Sammy’s find was “a really big thing”. Sammy described the “massive” tooth as his best-ever find, and said he spotted it lying on the sand and pebbles. Now that is one major discovery!
