A s parents, we need to go through a huge surge of emotions when dealing with our children and their problems. Among these concerns, teen burnout is something that is commonly experienced. It can manifest in several ways, and it is important to recognize the warning signs early to prevent further damage. Here are some common warning signs of teen burnout:
CHANGES IN SLEEP PATTERNS: Teens experiencing burnout may have difficulty falling or staying asleep, or they may sleep more than usual. It will be something that is happening out of the ordinary.
DECREASED MOTIVATION: Many think this is normal, but teens suddenly lose interest in activities they used to enjoy is something you need to look into and figure out. Teens may struggle to find the motivation to complete tasks. And that is what you need to highlight and work around. Their concerns need to be highlighted.
INCREASED IRRITABILITY: Teens may become easily frustrated, agitated, or angry. This again is not a normal norm. You will have to recognize the warning signs and not just brush them off.
DIFFICULTY CONCENTRATING: Teens may have trouble focusing on tasks or may have trouble remembering things. It again means you will have to keep a keen eye as they certainly wouldn’t come to share it with you.
PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS: Burnout can cause physical symptoms such as headaches, stomach aches, or other body pains.
SOCIAL WITHDRAWAL: Teens may isolate themselves from friends and family or may be reluctant to engage in social activities. This is true for their close friends as within their teen years, they do seem withdrawn as it is.
DECREASED ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE: Teens may experience a decline in academic performance or may struggle to keep up with their workload.
NEGATIVE SELF-TALK: Teens experiencing burnout may engage in negative self-talk, putting themselves down or doubting their abilities.
If you notice any of these warning signs in your teen, it is important to address the issue promptly. Encourage your teen to take breaks, practice self-care, and seek help if needed.
