The rising trend of hate crime against Muslims

n recent months, a disturbing trend of Quran burnings and desecrations of sacred texts has sparked outrage across the Muslim world. While European governments argue that such actions are protected by free speech, Muslims strongly believe that attacking their sacred symbols should be considered hate crimes.

Now, there is a glimmer of hope as the Danish government plans to introduce a bill that would ban the desecration of all sacred scriptures, including the Quran. This move is not only motivated by national security concerns but also signifies a step towards fostering respect and initiating a dialogue of cultures and civilisations.

Finland has set a precedent by disallowing the desecration of sacred texts under its religious peace laws. This echoes the sentiment shared by many in the Global South, where disrespecting religious symbols is widely seen as unacceptable. Resolutions passed by the UN Human Rights Council and General Assembly further emphasize the need to protect religious symbols and promote tolerance.

Europe, particularly with its Holocaust denial laws, understands the importance of establishing red lines that should not be crossed. It is crucial to recognize that repeatedly attacking the beliefs of two billion people is not an intellectual argument but rather motivated by hate. Acts of desecration carried out by far-right movements not only target Muslims, people of color, and immigrants but also fuel bigotry and anti-Western sentiment within Muslim societies.
Instead of insulting and attacking the religious figures and books of others, Europe should take the lead in initiating a dialogue of cultures and civilizations grounded in respect and humility. Criminalizing the desecration of symbols from all faiths can be the first step in this direction. By protecting sacred symbols, we can foster an atmosphere of understanding, where diverse beliefs are acknowledged and celebrated.

It is important to note that the right to free speech should be balanced with the responsibility to promote harmony and respect in society. While the law proposed by the Danish government aims to protect sacred scriptures, it is crucial to ensure that it does not infringe upon legitimate expressions of criticism or academic discourse. Striking this balance will be essential to uphold the values of freedom of expression while promoting a culture of respect.
The move by the Danish government to ban the desecration of sacred scriptures is a positive step towards fostering respect and initiating a dialogue of cultures and civilizations.
