S
tarting from August 12 to 27, the city of Karachi is set to experience a significant period of gas load shedding. This disruption is due to the planned annual maintenance work at the Kunnar-Pasakhi Deep (KPD) gas field, resulting in a reduction of 107 mmcfd in gas supply. This decrease in supply will have wide-ranging effects, impacting domestic, commercial, industrial, and power plant sectors.
The Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGC) has provided a detailed schedule for the maintenance work at the KPD gas field, which will span three phases over a period of 16 days. During this time, an eight-day complete shutdown and a four-day partial shutdown will be implemented.
As a consequence of the complete shutdown, the gas supply will be curtailed by 107 mmcfd, while the partial shutdown will further reduce supply by 50 mmcfd. This situation poses challenges for residents, businesses, and power plants in the Karachi area.
Unfortunately, this maintenance period follows recent disruptions in the gas supply. An incident occurred during the excavation work for the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) project in Karachi, damaging an 8-inch diameter gas supply line near Safoora Chowrangi. This disruption impacted several areas, including Memon Foundation Hospital, Sadi Town, Karachi University, Rimjhim, Rizvia Society, Dow University, Suparco, Sachal Goth, and neighboring villages.
