Deadly Airstrike Preceded Embassy Attack
The drone strike came about one hour after a reported US airstrike on a residential area in Baghdad’s Karrada neighborhood. That attack killed a senior leader and two members of Iraq’s paramilitary Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) . Five civilians in neighboring houses were also wounded .
Security Measures
Following Saturday’s attack, Iraqi security forces moved quickly to secure the area . Units of the Popular Mobilization Forces also arrived at the scene to investigate .
The Turkish government warned its citizens against traveling to Iraq due to the deteriorating security situation . Ankara urged Turkish nationals to avoid crowded areas, particularly around Baghdad’s Green Zone and international airports.
