While the world is literally fighting world-war. The exports are temporarily closing. It is possible that one part of the world may experience surplus of resources. While others may experience a huge shortage.
Mutton Prices are Facing a Drop!
One such example is of mutton, which is a major export product of Pakistan towards Middle East. While the export is temporarily closed, Pakistan is facing a surplus of mutton.
Due to this the prices may fall up to Rs.800 per kilogram more so beef prices may also fall around Rs.500 per kilogram.
Why Are Exports Suspended?
Regional tensions are causing the disruption. The ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel has affected airspace and maritime routes . Several Arab countries have closed their airspace and shipping lanes . This has halted all mutton and beef exports from Pakistan .
Meat shipments to Afghanistan were already suspended . Now, Gulf destinations are also unreachable. Exporters are facing major losses. Their ready-to-export stock may spoil . This also hurts Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves .
Current Market Reality
Despite the expected drop, current prices tell a different story. Wholesale dealers in Lahore and Karachi are actually raising prices . They appear to be taking advantage of the situation .
Right now, consumers are paying:
- Mutton: Between Rs. 2,600 and Rs. 3,000 per kilogram
- Beef: Between Rs. 1,200 and Rs. 1,600 per kilogram
The lack of regulatory action in wholesale markets is a problem . Without oversight, prices remain high despite the export halt .
Export Disruptions!
The next few days will be crucial. If export routes remain closed, more meat will pile up locally. This should eventually force wholesale prices down. For now, meat remains expensive in open markets. But the potential for Rs. 800 lower mutton prices offers hope. Families struggling with food costs may soon get some relief.
