A massive fire broke out at Gul Plaza, a well-known commercial building located on M.A. Jinnah Road, Karachi, late Saturday night, resulting in multiple fatalities, injuries, and widespread damage to shops. The incident once again highlights serious concerns regarding fire safety in Karachi’s commercial structures.
According to initial reports, the fire erupted suddenly and spread rapidly due to the presence of combustible materials and poor ventilation inside the building. Thick smoke quickly engulfed several floors, trapping shopkeepers and staff inside. Panic ensued as people attempted to escape through narrow staircases and blocked exits.
Rescue officials have confirmed that at least three people lost their lives, mostly due to suffocation caused by smoke inhalation, while more than 15 to 20 individuals sustained injuries, including burns and breathing complications. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, where several remain under treatment.
Fire brigade teams, Rescue 1122, and other emergency services reached the scene promptly. Over a dozen fire tenders and snorkels were deployed to control the blaze and evacuate those trapped inside. After several hours of continuous effort, officials stated that the fire was partially brought under control, though cooling operations are still underway to prevent reignition. Search operations continued well into the morning to ensure no one remained trapped inside the structure.
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and extended condolences to the affected families. He stated that authorities would investigate the cause of the fire and examine whether the building complied with safety regulations. Preliminary information suggests a possible electrical short circuit, but officials have stressed that a full inquiry will be conducted once the site is cleared.
Gul Plaza houses hundreds of small businesses and is considered one of the busiest commercial hubs in the city. Traders have reported heavy financial losses as several shops were completely destroyed by fire and smoke.
