A U.S. woman caused a flight delay at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport after refusing to board her return flight. O’Neija Andrew Robbins, who came to Pakistan in search of love, became distressed after a failed attempt to marry a Pakistani teenager.
The Emotional Disruption at Karachi Airport
In October 2024, Robbins traveled to Karachi to meet 19-year-old Nidal Memon, whom she had met online. They had developed a deep connection, and Memon promised to marry her. However, his family opposed the relationship, and Memon eventually abandoned Robbins when she arrived in Pakistan.
Stranded in a foreign country, Robbins found herself alone and confused. On January 29, 2025, she was scheduled to return to the U.S. on a Qatar Airways flight. However, when it was time to board, Robbins refused to go through immigration and would not board the plane. This led to a 36-minute delay.
Authorities Take Action
Security personnel escorted Robbins to the departure lounge. The Pakistani authorities also reached out to the U.S. Consulate for help, but received no response. Despite efforts to provide Robbins with a return flight, she refused to leave Pakistan.
Support and Resolution
Amid the crisis, local organizations like the Sindh government and JDC Foundation stepped in to support Robbins. They arranged a return ticket and offered medical care, ensuring she could safely return to the United States.
This incident shows the emotional complexities that can arise from online relationships. It also highlights the importance of having support in place when traveling abroad for personal reasons.
