Prince Rahim al-Hussaini Aga Khan V has been named the 50th hereditary Imam of the Ismaili community. This follows the sad passing of his father, Prince Karim al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV, who died at the age of 88. The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) shared the news on social media.
A New Leader for the Ismaili Community
The Ismaili Muslim community has been led by a hereditary Imam for over 1,400 years. Now, Prince Rahim takes on this important role. He will guide a community of around 12 to 15 million Ismailis spread across 35 countries. His appointment marks a significant moment in the Ismaili faith.
Born on October 12, 1971, in Geneva, Switzerland, Prince Rahim is the eldest son of Aga Khan IV and Princess Salimah. Raised in a multicultural environment, he received his education in the United States. For many years, he has been actively involved in global development work, following in his father’s footsteps.
Leading the Aga Khan Development Network
Prince Rahim has shown strong leadership within the Aga Khan Development Network. He chairs the Environment and Climate Committee, focusing on addressing climate change and protecting the environment. Additionally, he works on projects aimed at reducing poverty and improving the lives of people in underdeveloped regions.
The AKDN has helped build schools, hospitals, and vital infrastructure, particularly in Asia and Africa. Today, the network employs 80,000 people and continues to support communities in need.
