This biographical drama, written by Jamima Khan, faces criticism for the bold character ‘Maymouna.’ Shekhar Kapur and Jemima Khan attempt a romantic comedy around arranged marriage, challenging traditional conventions. The film’s central issue is the struggle to support a compelling romance, given the commitment-phobic protagonist Zoe’s documentary project on her friend Kazim’s assisted marriage. While the film highlights the benefits of assisted marriage and criticizes Western romantic marriage, it falls short in building an earned romance between the main characters. Despite a charming cast and a vibrant portrayal of Pakistani culture, the film fails to engage the audience with its laborious wedding arrangement process and lacks the promised romance. Jamima recently announced the movie’s four National Film Awards on Twitter.
