The way we talk reflects how much we are well aware of the words we are using. This is why you must analyze the kind of communication skills you are tapping into. It is important to identify what kind of words should have been off your chatbox a while ago as these can become extremely numbing and are the kind of cliche touch you don’t need.
Recent interesting research determined some of the most overused words which you might need to remove and create a whole new fresh way of chatting. Let’s see what these are:
HACKS
To hack used to mean “to cut with heavy blows.” Then came the computer age, and a new definition (courtesy of programmers). Now millions of enthusiastic people are blithely hacking all sorts of things. The fact is you are making use of it in every possible way- solutions, age-old remedies, simplified tips, etc. It just doesn’t make sense anymore.
THE NEW NORMAL
We’ve used this phrase a lot in recent years. But it isn’t as new as you might think. While “the new normal” became a popular phrase during the 2008 financial crisis, it was first used after World War I to discuss the transition to a new world after the war. Fast forward to 2021 and it has skyrocketed in use to talk about the Covid era. Okay, things have changed, the new normal is different from the old normal. We all get it — but enough already!
WFH
“WFH” started as a useful acronym. There was a definite need for it when most of us were working from home and needed something quick to text. But let’s face it- its overused now. WFH clothes, WFH hacks, WFH everything, and the list goes on. Working from home is an important part of the new work reality, so what if we stop calling it out as something special every time?
INFLUENCER
Yep. If there is one word that really gets to us is how everyone is willing and seemingly all set to jump on the ‘influencer’ bandwagon. It seems you just cannot escape influencers, although we’d like to try. Today pretty much anyone with even a small social media following is called an influencer and while we are not undermining anyone and the true talent they have, the fact is this term is really hitting on our last nerve now.
AND THAT’S THE TEA
So while you are all going through how what we say and how we say matters, let’s just say you don’t need to dig into ancient phrases to sound intelligent. This one is probably one of those which lost its value a long time ago. So its best that you tone down its usage a little more. It will lead to you getting a stronger way of expression when you eliminate it from your vocabulary.
