NDMA Issues Warning and Activates NEOC
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a flood warning for Punjab and Sindh due to expected heavy rainfall and rising river levels. To monitor and respond effectively, the NDMA has activated the National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC).
Forecasted Impact and Preparedness
According to the NDMA’s monsoon report, weather patterns originating from eastern India will likely affect regions in Pakistan, particularly along the Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab rivers starting from July 2nd. Moderate to heavy rains are anticipated, with specific alerts for potential flooding in the Sutlej River. Water levels could rise to 50,000 cusecs by July 5th and escalate further to 120,000 cusecs by July 10th, posing significant flood risks.
Safety Measures and Coordination
The NDMA stresses the importance of early warnings and preparedness. Residents should stay updated with weather forecasts and follow evacuation orders issued by local authorities promptly. The NDMA also warns about health risks, including diseases and dangers from fallen power lines. It advises residents in flood-prone areas to plan evacuations, identify safe shelters, and prepare emergency kits.
Vigilance and adherence to safety guidelines are crucial as the situation develops. The NDMA continues to collaborate closely with federal and provincial agencies to strengthen emergency response efforts and community resilience. Residents and travelers are urged to remain vigilant, heed official updates, and comply with directives from local authorities to mitigate risks and ensure personal safety during this period of heightened flood risk.
