Urgent Aid for Pakistan Floods in Punjab and Across Provinces
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has pledged $1 million to the World Health Organization (WHO) to support emergency relief for the ongoing Pakistan floods in Punjab and other provinces. This generous support will help protect lives and strengthen healthcare services in areas hit hardest by monsoon rains.
WHO and Gates Foundation Collaborate to Save Lives
Dr. Dapeng Luo, WHO Representative in Pakistan, thanked the Gates Foundation for acting swiftly. He noted that the funds will allow WHO teams to support national and provincial authorities. Together, they will deliver medical supplies, provide urgent care, and monitor the spread of diseases.
The donation will benefit more than 465,000 people across 33 high-risk districts, especially in Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan.
Focused Support for Vulnerable Communities
This initiative prioritizes support for pregnant people, children under five, older people, people with disabilities, and internally displaced persons (IDPs). WHO teams will make sure essential health services reach those most in need.
In addition, the funding will enhance disease surveillance, improve outbreak response, and ensure clear communication with communities. As a result, people in flood-hit regions will have better access to life-saving information and care.
Global Help Arrives Amid Worsening Floods
Since mid-August, more than 450 lives have been lost in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with over 860,000 people affected nationwide. The situation remains critical, particularly in Punjab, where flooding continues to disrupt lives and health services.
At the same time, the United Nations has released $600,000 in emergency aid. A UN team is preparing to assess the damage and coordinate further relief efforts.
With continued support, Pakistan can respond effectively to this crisis and build a stronger, more resilient health system for the future.
