In an exclusive interview with Social Diary Magazine,Zarmina opens up about her creative journey, the role of storytelling in her designs, and how she balances the demands of her career with staying true to her vision.
SD: How does your experience as an artist influence your approach to fashion design?
Zarmina: My journey as an artist taught me the power of storytelling through visuals, colors, and textures. In fashion, I see each piece as a canvas where I can bring emotions and ideas to life. Art has trained my eye to find beauty in the details—be it the brushstroke of embroidery, the interplay of fabrics, or the bold statement of a silhouette. I also love experimenting with different kinds of materials to see the magic they create. I carry that experience from my training at NCA. This artistic perspective ensures that my designs evoke feelings, not just aesthetics.
SD: How do the cultures and traditions you encounter during your travels shape your designs?
Zarmina: Travel is my greatest muse. Every culture I experience adds a layer of depth to my designs. From the vibrant colors of Moroccan souks to the intricate patterns of Turkish tiles, I weave these influences into my work. It’s about capturing the soul of a place and translating it into wearable art, creating pieces that resonate with both tradition and innovation.
SD: How do you manage to balance your passion for fashion, art, and vlogging?
Zarmina: Balancing these passions feels natural because they all feed into each other. Fashion is my medium, art is my inspiration, and vlogging is my way of sharing the journey. I create systems to stay organized, but I also embrace the chaos—it’s often in those moments of overlap that the most creative ideas emerge.
SD: What has been the most memorable destination for you as a traveler, and how did it inspire your work?
Zarmina: I’ve had quite a number of memorable destinations, such as India, Turkey, France, and China. These destinations showed me the harmony between nature and design. The serenity of the temples and the artistry of the architecture left a lasting impression. It inspired me to experiment with minimalist aesthetics, clean lines, and delicate details that celebrate craftsmanship.
SD: How do you stay authentic while catering to the demands of the fashion industry and your online audience?
Zarmina: Authenticity lies in staying true to my vision while evolving with the times. I remind myself that trends are fleeting, but a strong creative identity is timeless. By sharing my process and personal experiences in person, I connect with my audience on a deeper level—they appreciate the heart and soul behind each design.
SD: What role does storytelling play in your vlogs, and how does it connect with your fashion creations?
Zarmina: Storytelling is the thread that ties my vlogs to mental and physical recharging. Through my vlogs, I share the inspiration, challenges, and cultural discoveries that each destination offers. Traveling, hiking, and trekking allow me to let go of things that need to be released from my mind, providing a refreshing reboot that leads to a fresh perspective on life—a larger story.
SD: How do you incorporate traditional Pakistani elements into your work while keeping it modern?
Zarmina: I see traditional Pakistani craftsmanship as a treasure trove of inspiration. From intricate embroidery to vibrant textiles, I integrate these elements in a way that feels fresh and contemporary. It’s about blending heritage with modern silhouettes, ensuring the past and present coexist beautifully in each piece.
SD: What challenges have you faced in combining your love for fashion, art, and travel into a cohesive career?
Zarmina: The biggest challenge has been finding a rhythm that allows me to pursue all three without compromising any of them. There are moments of doubt and logistical hurdles, but these challenges push me to innovate. Ultimately, it’s about embracing the intersections and trusting that my unique blend will resonate with others.
SD: How do you use social media to share your creative journey and connect with your audience?
Zarmina: I would love for social media to be my digital atelier. It’s where I want to share sketches, behind-the-scenes moments, travel adventures, and finished designs. By being open about my process and inspiration, I want to build a community that feels invested in my journey. It’s not just about showcasing products—it’s about building a dialogue and inspiring others. I still have a long way to go in building my social media presence, but I’m getting there. 🙂
SD: If you could design an outfit inspired by a specific destination, which place would you choose and why?
Zarmina: I would choose Santorini, Greece. Its whitewashed architecture against the azure sea is a lesson in simplicity and contrast. I’d design an ethereal outfit with flowing silhouettes, crisp whites, and touches of cobalt blue, capturing the essence of serenity and endless horizons. And I would love to model that outfit myself!
