Bannu, Pakistan: A deadly terrorist attack hit Bannu on Tuesday evening, resulting in at least 11 fatalities, including five women and four children. Additionally, 22 people were injured when militants rammed two explosives-laden vehicles into the perimeter of Bannu Cantonment, a high-security zone.
The Attack Unfolds
The attack started around 6:30 PM, shortly after Iftar. Militants targeted the entrance to Bannu Cantonment with explosive vehicles. Security forces managed to intercept the vehicles, triggering massive explosions. This led to a fierce gun battle between the attackers and security personnel. As a result, six militants were killed.
Damage and Casualties
The force of the explosions caused severe damage. Several houses near the cantonment collapsed, trapping many people under the rubble. A mosque close to the entrance also caved in, with worshippers trapped inside. Emergency teams quickly responded, working to rescue the victims from the debris.
So far, 10 security personnel and numerous civilians have been injured. They were taken to nearby hospitals, where authorities declared an emergency. Doctors and medical staff were called in to help treat the wounded.
Militant Group Takes Responsibility
The group Jaish-i-Fursan Muhammad, a faction of the banned Hafiz Gul Bahadur network, claimed responsibility for the attack. However, this claim has yet to be independently verified.
Prime Minister’s Statement
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of life. He praised the courage of security forces and condemned the terrorists’ actions. The Prime Minister emphasized that such attacks, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan, would not succeed in destabilizing the nation.
