Karachi Mayor Says Gul Plaza Inferno Under Control, Basement Clearance Ongoing
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has confirmed that the deadly Gul Plaza fire is now under control as rescue teams continue clearing the basement of Gul Plaza in search of missing persons. The Karachi Gul Plaza inferno, which broke out late Saturday night, has left the city in shock and mourning.
Rescue Operation Intensifies at Gul Plaza
According to the mayor, coordinated efforts by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), district administration, and multiple rescue agencies have stabilized the situation. Heavy machinery has been deployed to remove debris, while cranes are being used to extract vehicles trapped on the plaza’s roof.
Basement Search and Structural Challenges
Rescue teams have now entered the basement, one of the most dangerous sections due to structural damage. The shopping complex, which housed over 1,200 shops, partially collapsed after burning for more than 24 hours. Firefighting had to resume after flames reignited from smoldering wreckage.
Death Toll and Missing Persons Update
Authorities have recovered at least 23 bodies, though officials caution that the final count may rise. Mayor Wahab stated that 65 people remain missing, with several bodies yet to be identified pending DNA analysis.
Inquiry and Accountability
While an inquiry committee has been formed to investigate negligence, officials say the immediate focus remains on completing rescue operations and supporting affected families.
