What Does Independence Really Mean for Pakistan?
As Pakistan celebrated its 78th Independence Day, a day meant to honor freedom and self-determination, a controversial crackdown by Punjab Police sparked outrage. Police officers in Punjab raided multiple shops and confiscated T-shirts featuring the image of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. A now-viral photo of an officer posing with the seized merchandise has ignited debate across social media.
This act raises a critical question: If the country is free, are its people truly free?
Freedom of Expression Under Threat?
Many Pakistanis took to social media, questioning whether this Independence Day reflected true “Azadi.” Prominent actress and activist Hina Bayat voiced her concern, reminding the Punjab Police and government about the core meaning of Independence. She wrote:
“Independence means Freedom — of opinion & expression!! That is the essence of true freedom — ‘haqeeqi azadi’!”
She also added:
“Kis baat ka itna khauf hai keh aap tasweeron se bhi darr rahay hain?”
Her words reflect a growing sentiment among citizens that freedom of speech and freedom to support a leader of your choice are essential pillars of any democratic and independent nation.
Pakistan’s Independence Day: More Than Just a Date
Independence is not just about a country breaking free from colonial rule. It’s also about ensuring freedom for women, freedom of choice, and the right to dissent.
On a day when Pakistan should celebrate progress, the suppression of basic civil liberties casts a long shadow. If Pakistan is truly independent, then its people — regardless of political preference — must be free as well.
As the debate grows, one thing is clear: Independence Day should reflect not just national freedom, but the freedom of every Pakistani.
