Nawabzada Shahzain Marri, the main suspect in the assault on two citizens in Karachi’s Boat Basin area, fled the city after the violent incident on February 19. The attack injured two victims, and Shahzain Marri, son of a prominent feudal lord from Balochistan, managed to escape. Following this, Karachi’s South Zone Police launched a manhunt to capture him.
Details of the Boat Basin Assault
The assault unfolded when Barkat Soomro, Deputy Secretary of the PPP Youth Organization Karachi Division, and his friend Waqas were attacked by armed men in the Boat Basin area. After parking their car near Boat Basin Food Street, the two were followed by another vehicle. The car reversed into theirs, and several armed men got out.
The attackers immediately began assaulting Soomro and his friend. One of them even threatened to shoot Soomro in the eye. The attackers were allegedly under the influence of drugs, which further escalated the situation. Soomro later expressed concerns over the rising culture of impunity in Karachi, especially in its affluent areas.

Police Response and Investigations
In response to the assault, South Zone Police conducted raids in Karachi’s Defence area. During these operations, the police arrested seven security guards linked to Shahzain Marri. They also seized modern firearms, and investigations are underway to determine if they are licensed. Among the arrested security guards were Ghaus Bakhsh, Jalad Khan, Ali Zain, and Hassan, all of whom serve as bodyguards for Marri.
Despite these arrests, Shahzain Marri managed to flee to Quetta. The police have now requested the Balochistan government’s assistance in capturing him. Meanwhile, efforts to apprehend other suspects involved in the assault continue.
The Boat Basin assault has raised serious concerns about public safety and illegal firearms in Karachi. In response, authorities are committed to tackling these issues. Sindh government spokesperson Sadia Javed has promised to take decisive action against illegal firearms in the region. As investigations continue, the police remain determined to bring Shahzain Marri and the other attackers to justice.
