Insensitive or Intentional? Director’s Shocking Take on Diwali and Gaza Genocide
Indian filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, known for pushing boundaries in cinema, crossed a line this week not on screen, but on social media. In a now-viral post, Varma wrote:
“In INDIA, only one day is DIWALI and in GAZA, every day is DIWALI 🔥🔥🔥”
By comparing the celebratory fireworks of Diwali to the catastrophic bombings in Gaza, he conflated a religious festival of light with the horrific Gaza genocide — a move many saw as cruel and deeply tone-deaf.

Public Backlash: Diwali is About Light, Not Death
Outraged netizens from India and Pakistan alike condemned Varma for mocking the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Critics argued that Diwali, a celebration rooted in peace and good triumphing over evil, should never be compared to ethnic cleansing and mass civilian deaths.
Rakhi Tripathi, daughter of noted peace activist Prof. VK Tripathi, reminded followers that Diwali’s spirit is compassion, not destruction.
A Mirror to Society? Or a Warning Sign?
Disturbingly, Varma’s post received thousands of likes revealing just how normalized dehumanization has become online. The reaction isn’t just about Varma it’s about what society now tolerates.
