Urgent Evacuation Orders in Khan Younis
Tens of thousands of Palestinians in Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip, were forced to evacuate their homes overnight. Israel issued these urgent evacuation orders as its military intensified attacks on Hamas militants. Residents had to flee under the cover of darkness amidst the sound of tank shelling and airstrikes.
Impact of Airstrikes and Humanitarian Crisis
Recent Israeli airstrikes have targeted Hamas and Islamic Jihad positions, including military structures and weapon storage sites. However, a tragic airstrike on a school sheltering displaced Palestinians in Gaza City killed at least 90 people. This incident has sparked international outrage. Israel claims the strike hit a militant command post, but Hamas and Islamic Jihad dispute this assertion.
In Khan Younis, evacuation orders covered large areas, forcing tens of thousands to move to already overcrowded humanitarian zones. Philippe Lazzarini of UNRWA emphasized the dire situation, noting that many evacuees are fleeing with just a few belongings and finding shelters packed beyond capacity.
Rising Casualties and Persistent Conflict
The conflict, which began in October after a Hamas attack on southern Israel, has resulted in nearly 40,000 Palestinian deaths. Most of the casualties are civilians, while Israel has reported 329 soldier fatalities. The Gaza Strip’s population of 2.3 million is largely displaced, with many areas reduced to rubble.
Despite the establishment of humanitarian zones like Al-Mawasi in Khan Younis, these areas have also been targeted by Israeli airstrikes. As a result, displaced families face ongoing danger and uncertainty, moving from one perilous area to another.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains critical as the conflict continues. The international community is urging for urgent measures to address the crisis and work towards a peaceful resolution. The dire conditions highlight the urgent need for sustained international intervention and support.
