Frank Caprio’s Early Life and Career
Born in Providence, Rhode Island, on November 24, 1936, Frank Caprio was the son of Italian immigrants. He worked as a high school teacher while attending Suffolk University Law School. After finishing his degree, he opened a law office and joined the Providence City Council.
In 1985, Caprio became a judge on the Providence Municipal Court. He served as Chief Judge until his retirement in 2023.
Caught in Providence Made Him a Global Icon
Caprio’s court became famous thanks to the TV show Caught in Providence. In the show, he listened to traffic cases and made thoughtful decisions. His gentle way of speaking and listening won the hearts of people everywhere. Many of the clips went viral online, spreading his message of empathy and understanding.
A Life of Giving Back
Judge Frank Caprio also worked to support students. He created scholarships at Providence College and Suffolk University. He led the Rhode Island Board of Governors for Higher Education and received many awards for his service.
