Karachi will experience significant gas load shedding from August 12 to 27 due to planned annual maintenance at the Kunnar-Pasakhi Deep (KPD) gas field. This maintenance will reduce the gas supply by 107 mmcfd, affecting domestic, commercial, industrial, and power plant sectors across the city.
Gas Supply Disruptions: Planned Maintenance and Recent Incidents Impacting Karachi’s Residents and Businesses
The Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGC) has provided a detailed schedule for the maintenance work at the KPD gas field, which will span three phases over a period of 16 days. During this time, an eight-day complete shutdown and a four-day partial shutdown will be implemented.
The complete shutdown will curtail the gas supply by 107 mmcfd, and the partial shutdown will further reduce it by 50 mmcfd. This situation challenges residents, businesses, and power plants in the Karachi area.
Unfortunately, this maintenance period follows recent disruptions in the gas supply. Workers damaged an 8-inch diameter gas supply line near Safoora Chowrangi during excavation for the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) project in Karachi. This incident disrupted gas service in several areas, including Memon Foundation Hospital, Sadi Town, Karachi University, Rimjhim, Rizvia Society, Dow University, Suparco, Sachal Goth, and nearby villages.
