Veteran Bollywood actor Govardhan Asrani, lovingly known as Asrani, passed away in Mumbai at the age of 84. He had been unwell for some time and was hospitalized for five days before his death. His passing marks the end of a glorious chapter in Hindi cinema.
Born in Jaipur on January 1, 1940, Asrani came from a Sindhi family. He began his career as a voice artist for All India Radio to support his education. Later, he trained at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), which laid the foundation for his acting career.
A Career Spanning Over Five Decades
Asrani entered the film world with Hare Kaanch Ki Choodiyan in 1967. Soon, he became popular for his comic timing and expressive acting. He acted in more than 350 films across Hindi and Gujarati cinema.
Throughout his career, he worked with top directors like Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Gulzar, and B.R. Chopra. One of his most loved roles was the quirky jailer in Sholay (1975). That performance remains a fan favorite and a landmark in Indian comedy.
