The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has issued a public notice to auction six Bahria Town properties of Malik Riaz.
NAB Takes Action Against Malik Riaz properties & Bahria Town
These properties are located in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. The action comes after Malik Riaz, chairman of Bahria Town, and his son Ali Riaz failed to pay the agreed amount in a plea deal. According to reports Malik Riaz is accused of money laundering. The court in lieu of failing to get the settlement agreement decides to auction some of the properties of Malik Riaz. Keeping in view that Malik Riaz is the biggest Real Estate tycoon of Pakistan.
Why is NAB Auctioning These Properties?
NAB had reached a settlement with Malik Riaz in a corruption case. However, he and his son defaulted on payments. Now, NAB is legally seizing and auctioning the properties to recover dues.
Money Laundering Allegations Against Malik Riaz
NAB filed a complaint under the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2010. The case involves 10 accused, including Bahria Town’s administration.
Key Allegations against Malik Riaz:
- Rs. 22.5 billion were illegally invole in laundering out of Pakistan.
- The money was sent abroad and then brought back.
- Those said Funds were used to construct Bahria Icon Tower in Karachi.
Legal Consequences for Malik Riaz & Family
If proven guilty, the accused could face: Heavy fines. Along with the Confiscation of his assets. More so there is a high chance of Possible imprisonment. NAB will proceed with the auction of the seized properties. The case remains under investigation.
