Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan. Unfortunately has recently been sentenced to 14 years in prison. While his wife, Bushra Bibi, has received a 7-year jail sentence. Thereby stemming from his deteriorating relationship with the military establishment. Ultimately which has historically played a powerful role in the country’s politics.

Khan’s legal troubles began after he was ousted from power in April 2022. Following his removal, he faced multiple charges. Mainly including corruption and misuse of authority. His supporters argue that these charges are fabricated. Moreover they are part of a broader strategy to silence him and diminish his political influence. They contend that Khan’s outspoken criticism of the military and his attempts to assert civilian supremacy have made him a target for retaliation.

The UK’s National Crime Agency froze several accounts belonging to Malik Riaz in the UK due to suspicions of corruption and funds linked to illegal activities.
Instead of taking the case to court at the taxpayers’ expense, the NCA opted to reach an agreement with Malik Riaz, in which he would pay a fine of £190 million without admitting any guilt.
They secretly met in London regarding the £190 million.
The NCA announced that this amount would be transferred to the government of Pakistan.
Imran Khan’s accountability minister, Shahzad Akbar, traveled to the UK several times to meet Malik Riaz at the Dorchester Hotel and at his daughter’s home.
Dawn reported that a source revealed, “Mr. Akbar suggested to the NCA that they should reach a settlement with him [Riaz]. Otherwise, he warned them that Riaz would deplete their prosecution budget by employing high-powered lawyers to prolong court proceedings.”
Malik Riaz & the art of the deal
The Pakistani government took extraordinary measures to ensure that the property tycoon’s €190 million settlement in the UK was advantageous for him.
Instead of the funds being deposited into the Government’s account, they were directed to the Supreme Court’s account.
Towards the end of 2019, something unusual transpired during a federal cabinet meeting in Islamabad. Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Accountability Shahzad Akbar was permitted to introduce a non-agenda item. He brought along a sealed envelope that he claimed contained a non-disclosure agreement related to a multi-million-pound settlement.
Recently reached between the UK-based National Crime Agency (NCA) and property tycoon Malik Riaz. According to a source present at the meeting, Human Rights Minister Shireen Mazari raised an objection, asking.
“What approval are we granting when we don’t even know its contents?”
They were informed that if it were to be opened, there could be implications for national security and the UK government as well.
Dawn reported at that time, “Interestingly, hours after the NCA verdict. Malik Riaz claimed in his tweets that the recovered amount would go to the Supreme Court to return Rs460 billion for acquiring vast land in Karachi for developing the Bahria Town housing scheme.” His tweets prompted many to question why the government was not being more transparent.
