2023 has been a great year … cinematically. The movies coming out this year catered to a huge audience and have brought forth a rush of emotions! Let’s look into and talk about some of the best movies offered to us.
Oppenheimer
There’s no two ways about it. This clearly was a masterpiece. Christopher Nolan’s most spectacular, cerebral, and haunting blockbuster starring the charming Cillian Murphy was incredible in every way! In his quest to build America the A-bomb, the science-fact thriller gave the audience a truly remarkable experience. In a world of CGI, Nolan always takes it differently. Opting to recreate using practical effects he manages to leave you shaken to the core.
Killers of the Flower Moon
Being considered one of the leading contenders for the Oscars (already), Martin Scorsese’s 1920s true-crime epic is meticulously crafted and is truly gripping in every frame. Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro can be considered as being in their top form as the two versatile actors are up to their necks in the blood of Osage Native Americans. While Leo and Scorsese are known to be a match of impeccable talent and you can’t expect anything less than grandeur from them, it’s the newcomer Lily Gladstone who draws remarkable attention to her acting prowess and is one of the leading stars of the film with a soulful, delicate performance as a taciturn Osage heiress with the moxie to survive this orgy of greed and violence.
Air
While we’ve seen plenty of films highlighting the greatness of Basketball legend ‘Micheal Jordan’, its Ben Affleck’s pacy, loose-limbed retelling of Nike’s efforts to sign a young Jordan from under the noses of more powerful rivals Adidas and Converse that manages to become both intriguing and exciting. The story is simple but infectious as you get to immerse yourself in the 70s golden age with supremely talented Matt Damon taking on a leading role with such class and sass!
Barbie
How could we ‘not’ have the pink beauty on the list? Greta Gerwig’s fantasia was truly a joy in every way as it hit on a plethora of emotions, including silliness, mockery, joy, and heartbreak and then we had the living doll on a journey of empowerment with her Ken in tow. Margot Robbie promised viewers that the movie is for those who love Barbie and for those who don’t- and she was absolutely right!
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
An experience that brings out the best in animation, the latest installment from Spider-Man is great in every way! The animation is even more impressive and imaginative than its predecessors as the film gives us new universes done in soft watercolors and futuristic detail while also returning us to the embrace of the vibrant, comic-book-art–inspired Brooklyn that its teenage hero, Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), inhabits.
John Wick: Chapter 4
This chapter is blissfully entertaining, full of pratfalls and acting turns that make audiences swell with oohs, aahs, and yelps. It’s far more narratively focused than its previous sequels, while still managing to globe-trot a behemoth cast à la Chapter 2 and Chapter 3. Keanu Reeves truly embodies his role in layers of perfection which makes this movie a masterpiece in every right.
When You Finish Saving the World
Jesse Eisenberg’s directorial debut reflects his acting capabilities- the movie is smart, wry, thoughtful, and personal. In adapting his own audiobook, Eisenberg turns to Julianne Moore and Finn Wolfhard to play a high-minded social worker and her vapid teen musician son. Moore, in particular, gives a sterling performance—channeling a vein of lofty, humorless do-gooders that can be off-putting as it is well-meaning.
