Khaled Ahmed: A Loss to Pakistan’s Journalistic Landscape

Khaled Ahmed, a legendary figure in Pakistani journalism, passed away at 81, leaving an indelible mark on the media landscape. Known for his incisive analysis and unwavering commitment to truth, Khaled Ahmed died of cardiac arrest on Sunday at his Zaman Park residence. His contributions to journalism and intellectual discourse have set a benchmark for excellence, ensuring his legacy continues to inspire generations in Pakistan and beyond.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Khaled Ahmed was born in 1943 in Jalandhar, India. He initially began his career in the foreign service before transitioning to journalism, where he would leave an indelible mark. For over four decades, he worked with major publications such as The Pakistan Times, The Nation, The Frontier Post, The Friday Times, and Daily Times. In his final years, he served as consulting editor at Newsweek Pakistan.

He studied at Government College Lahore and graduated with an MA (Honours). In addition, he pursued a diploma in the German language from Punjab University and completed a Russian language diploma from Moscow State University in 1970.

A Career Marked by Insightful Journalism

Known for his deep understanding of Pakistan’s sociopolitical issues, Khaled Ahmed’s writings were both thought-provoking and fearless. He explored complex topics such as the Sunni-Shia conflict, sectarian violence, and Pakistan’s struggle with terrorism. His books, including Pakistan: The State in Crisis and Sectarian War: Sunni-Shia Conflict in Pakistan, are essential readings for those seeking a deeper understanding of the country.

Khaled Ahmed, renowned journalist, passes away

Many of his colleagues, such as Najam Sethi and Talat Hussain, admired his intellect, humility, and courage. They noted that despite his extensive knowledge, he remained soft-spoken and approachable. His ability to challenge mainstream narratives and offer nuanced insights made him a revered figure in Pakistan’s journalistic community.

Khaled Ahmed’s Enduring Legacy

Khaled Ahmed’s passing is a significant loss to both journalism and intellectual discourse in Pakistan. His writing was characterized by its elegance and attention to detail, and his unique perspective on Pakistan’s complexities will continue to inspire future generations of journalists and thinkers.

Funeral prayers will take place at Zaman Park ground at 3 pm on Monday, where his friends, family, and admirers will gather to honor his memory.

In a country where the voices of intellectuals are often overlooked, Khaled Ahmed’s contributions will always be remembered. His voice will continue to resonate in Pakistan’s journalistic landscape, shaping how the country understands itself and its place in the world.
