The Sindh government has officially lifted the previously imposed closing-time restrictions for markets, shopping malls, restaurants, hotels, marriage halls, and other commercial businesses across the province. The decision comes as part of efforts to support economic growth, improve business activity, and provide relief to traders and the public.
Sindh Withdraws Austerity-Based Business Timings
According to a notification issued on Saturday, all commercial centres including shops, food outlets, malls, hotels, and wedding venues are now exempt from the earlier operating-hour restrictions introduced under the province’s austerity and energy conservation policy.
The restrictions had originally been enforced on April 10 amid rising fuel prices and concerns over electricity consumption following tensions in the Middle East and disruptions in global oil supplies.
Under the earlier policy, shopping malls in smaller districts were ordered to close by 8pm, while businesses in divisional headquarters could remain open until 9pm. Restaurants were permitted dine-in operations only between 7pm and 11:30pm, while marriage halls and marquees were allowed to function from 8pm to midnight.
Businesses to Resume Normal Working Hours
Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon confirmed that commercial centres throughout Sindh would now operate under normal business hours without any mandatory closure timings.
He stated that the provincial government reviewed concerns raised by traders, industrialists, and members of the business community before making the decision. According to the minister, the move reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening economic stability, increasing commercial activity, and ensuring public convenience.
Energy Conservation Policy Reconsidered
The Sindh government had initially introduced the restrictions as part of an energy-saving strategy during a period of severe fuel inflation and soaring petroleum prices. Pakistan witnessed record increases in petrol and diesel prices after global oil markets were disrupted by the conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.
However, officials now believe that continuing strict business timings could negatively impact employment opportunities, trade activity, and economic recovery across the province.
Traders Welcoming Sindh Government’s Decision
Business leaders and traders have largely welcomed the removal of restrictions, calling it a positive step for retailers, restaurants, and the hospitality sector. Commercial stakeholders argued that shorter operating hours had affected customer traffic, sales volumes, and overall business performance.
The Sindh government also reiterated that it would continue consulting business communities before implementing major economic or administrative policies in the future.
