The Mexican military captured and killed the most wanted drug lord in the country. Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as ‘El Mencho,’ died after a fierce shootout. He was the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). The operation took place in the western state of Jalisco. This area includes popular tourist destinations like Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara.
Top Drug Lord ‘El Mencho’ Deadly Shootout Leads to Death
Mexico’s defense ministry released details of the raid. Security forces tracked down El Mencho in Jalisco. A violent shootout erupted between the military and cartel gunmen. Oseguera Cervantes was seriously injured during the firefight. He died while being airlifted to Mexico City for medical treatment. Four other cartel members were also killed during the initial raid. The death toll later rose to seven. Three critically wounded individuals, including El Mencho, succumbed to their injuries.
Violence Erupts Across the State
The death of the cartel leader triggered immediate chaos. Cartel members launched a violent campaign across Jalisco. Gunmen blocked major highways with burning vehicles. They torched cars and trucks to disrupt travel. Airport operations in Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta were heavily impacted. Schools in the Guadalajara metropolitan area closed their doors. Parents were told to keep children home due to the clashes.

Rising Death Toll Includes Security Forces
The violence extended beyond the cartel. State officials reported multiple attacks on security personnel. At least seven National Guard members were killed. These deaths occurred in the municipalities of Tapalpa and Zapopan. A prison guard lost his life in Puerto Vallarta. Inmates at a local lockup started a riot following the news. An agent from the Jalisco state prosecutor’s office also kill in Guadalajara.
International Travel Disrupted
The escalating violence forced international action. The United States, Canada, and India issued urgent warnings. These governments told their citizens in Mexico to “stay in shelter.” They advised against any unnecessary movement in the region. Airlines in the US and Canada responded swiftly. Several carriers cancelled flights to Mexico. Routes to Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta were suspend until further notice.
