T
he Pakistani government’s inability to provide relief to its citizens has plunged the nation into a state of distress. Reports of individuals resorting to extreme measures due to exorbitant electricity bills have emerged, while protests against the surging electricity prices have taken hold in various cities. The average unit price of electricity has skyrocketed to nearly 60 rupees, with projections suggesting it may reach an alarming 90 rupees. This dire situation has left people struggling to afford basic necessities, including food and electricity bills, thereby exacerbating the daily challenges faced by the populace.
The surge in electricity prices can be attributed to previous government Independent Power Producer (IPP) projects and compounded by economic mismanagement under the recent IMF deal. Even those who have been relatively privileged are now grappling with the unmanageable tariffs. In light of this crisis, Nadia Khan, a prominent television personality, reached out to her celebrity peers, only to discover that even A-list celebrities are finding it increasingly difficult to cope with their electricity bills.
Sadia Imam, a renowned actress, shared her staggering electricity bill of 67,000 rupees. In response to these exorbitant costs, she made the decision to transition her home to solar energy, but even after this conversion, she still received a bill amounting to 19,000 rupees.
Nida Yasir, another prominent celebrity, revealed that her family had been away on vacation for half a month, yet she was shocked to receive a bill of 100,000 rupees. Now, she is diligently monitoring and reducing energy consumption in an attempt to manage the costs, as transitioning to solar energy remains a costly endeavor.
Fiza Ali, despite her limited use of air conditioning and her recent travels, was also confronted with an electricity bill of 67,000 rupees.
Even Nadia Khan, who herself was not present at her residence for the month due to work commitments and visiting her father in Islamabad, received a staggering electricity bill totaling 75,000 rupees.
These revelations highlight the widespread shock and distress experienced by celebrities themselves as they grapple with the burdensome electricity bills and excessive government taxes. The dire situation facing ordinary citizens is mirrored even in the lives of those in the spotlight, underscoring the urgent need for relief and reform in Pakistan’s electricity sector.
