Viral Selfie Incident
Shahid Afridi, a famous former Pakistani cricketer, social activist, and philanthropist, recently faced a social media uproar. Afridi, also a cricket analyst for Samaa TV, was caught in controversy when a selfie with members of NW Friends of Israel (NWFOI) went viral. The NWFOI shared the image, showing Afridi with the group’s co-chair Raphi Bloom and deputy chair Bernie Yaffe, and thanked him for supporting their vigil calling for the release of hostages.
Social Media Backlash
The NWFOI’s post read, “Pakistani international cricketer @SAfridiOfficial stopped to offer his support for our call to release the hostages at our NWFOI vigil last Sunday in Manchester. Shahid is pictured with NWFOI co-chair Raphi Bloom & deputy chair Bernie Yaffe. Thank you for your support, Shahid!” This created a buzz on social media, leading many to criticize Afridi, assuming he endorsed the group’s stance.
Afridi’s Clarification
In response, Afridi quickly clarified the situation. He explained that a group of foreigners asked him for a selfie while he was walking in Manchester. Unaware of their affiliations, he agreed to their request. Afridi later expressed his disappointment on social media, emphasizing that the picture was misinterpreted. “Imagine strolling down a street in Manchester (UK) and so-called fans approach you for a selfie. You oblige, and moments later, they upload it as some form of Zionist endorsement. Unbelievable! Please don’t believe everything that is uploaded,” Afridi posted.
Afridi’s Stand on the Issue
Afridi also highlighted his concern for the suffering of innocent lives in Palestine. He stressed that the photo does not reflect his support for any conflict involving human lives. Afridi reiterated that he takes pictures with fans from all over the world and this situation was no different. He concluded his message with a plea for peace and an end to the ongoing conflict, using hashtags like #HumanityFirst and #PeaceMiddleEast.
This incident shows the challenges public figures face in the age of social media, where innocent interactions can be misinterpreted. Afridi’s quick clarification aimed to set the record straight and emphasize his commitment to peace and humanity.
