Sheema Kermani, Aurat March Organisers Detained Sparks Outrage Across Pakistan

by Sana Ariff

The news that Sheema Kermani and other Aurat March organisers briefly detained in Karachi has triggered widespread outrage online and raised fresh concerns about civil liberties. As videos circulated showing activists being handled by police, the incident quickly became a flashpoint for debate around freedom of expression and the right to peaceful assembly in Pakistan.

What Happened in Karachi?

Detention Outside Press Club

Seven Aurat March activists were stopped and briefly detained by Karachi police while attempting to enter the Karachi Press Club. Their goal was to hold a press conference regarding delays in obtaining a no-objection certificate (NOC) for their upcoming march.

Among those detained were prominent activist Sheema Kermani and local council member Shahzadi Rai. The group was later released on orders from provincial authorities, but the damage had already been done in the public eye.

Sheema Kermani is a hero for many of us. Her treatment by the police is appalling and we demand her release https://t.co/NtECuZCoFy

Viral Videos Fuel Public Anger

Clips showing Kermani being pushed into a police vehicle and other activists forcibly handled spread rapidly on social media. Many users described the scenes as disturbing and questioned whether such actions reflect a broader decline in civil freedoms.

They didn’t even spare people within their own system – an elected trans city councillor in KMC?
You think they will spare @AuratMarchKHI women?
Because they represent women and gender and ethnic minorities? https://t.co/UlMWe3Z9Ro

Growing Concerns Over Civil Liberties

Activists and commentators criticized the move as a “scare tactic,” arguing that the right to peaceful protest is being undermined. The incident also raised questions about equal treatment under the law, especially given that one of the detainees belongs to a ruling political party.

Despite the setback, Aurat March organisers remain determined to proceed with their protest. The incident has not only intensified public scrutiny but also reignited a national conversation about rights, governance, and accountability in Pakistan.
