This year Chehlum of Imam Hussain A. S one of the holiest days in the Islamic calendar saw an overwhelming public participation with more than 2. On this occasion of Ashura 10 crore (21 million) Zaireen (pilgrims) visited Karbala in Iraq to mourn the martyrdom of this figure. This event comes four days after Ashura is to show the importance of Imam Hussain A. S and the follow-ups his followers are willing to take.
The Significance of Chehlum
Chehlum or Arabian is a mourning observation held forty days to the day of Imam Hussain A.S – the grandson of prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) and a figure of righteousness. This is when many Shia Muslims and indeed the whole world practice mourning and a time of renewal of faith. In this period the visit to Karbala is not merely a formality an offering of respect but also in unison with the facts and values for which Imam Hussain A. S. fought for.
Record-Breaking Pilgrimage
This year’s Chehlum had the largest crowds and the tally of the visitors exceeded 2 Million. 10 crore. This is a record that speaks volumes of the eternal devotion and reverence for Imam Hussain A. S. The management of such a huge number of people was a challenge but it also brought out the best of the Government of Iraq and local people who were up all night to welcome the millions.
Organizational Efforts and Challenges
Overseeing such a huge population of people scares me as they will need careful planning and organization to contain, especially with such trips. There are several international humanitarian organizations and the Iraqi authorities who made an effort to make sure that the pilgrims’ needs were met. This incorporated the provision of first aid, protection against/and or mitigation of physical harm, and supply of food and shelter. However, this persistence of challenge does not negate the well-functioning of the pilgrimage as a result of hard-working and devoted staff.
Global Participation
The Chehlum generates a lot of travelers from all over the world and makes clear the creative message of Imam Hussain A. S. People who came for the Arba’een procession were seen arriving from different countries including Middle Eastern countries, South Asia, Africa, and many more, this showing that the message of Imam Hussain A.S is for all people of the world.
The Spiritual Impact
Thus, the decision to perform the pilgrimage to Karbala is many of the pilgrims as a sacred action. The long distance, sometimes on foot, which they are willing to travel to the holy shrine is an act of worship, as well as, a way of cleaning oneself spiritually. All these people prove beyond reasonable doubt that faith endures and the values imbibed in the followers of Imam Hussain A. S.
Conclusion
The great response of over 2. ‘Chehlum of Imam Hussain A. S.’ is a devine occasion which every Shia Zareen considers privileged to perform and the record of 10 crores Zaireen for the same breaks all records and proves how much this mourning ceremony is important in the life of a Shia.
