Austrian authorities have uncovered a serious terror plot aimed at Taylor Swift’s upcoming concerts in Vienna. A 19-year-old Austrian with North Macedonian roots has been arrested after planning an attack at the Ernst Happel Stadium. The suspect had assembled explosive devices and gathered weapons, including machetes, in preparation for the assault.
Authorities discovered that the teenager intended to strike the large crowd of around 20,000 fans. His arrest followed concerns raised by his radical online activities and a pledge of allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) group. Moreover, they found chemicals and technical equipment at his home in Ternitz, confirming his intent to carry out the attack.
In addition to the main suspect, two other youths, aged 17 and 15, were also detained. The suspect had become radicalized online, changing his appearance and spreading extremist views. Furthermore, his sudden departure from work in late July, along with vague statements about having “big plans,” triggered suspicions and led to his arrest.
In response to this threat, Taylor Swift’s three scheduled concerts in Vienna have been cancelled. Although fans, some of whom traveled from far-off locations, are disappointed, they understand that safety must come first.
This incident highlights the ongoing threat to large public events. It recalls past attacks, such as the 2015 Bataclan massacre and the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing. As the investigation continues, both organizers and security agencies are working diligently to ensure the safety of future events.
