Swelling of gums is a common problem that can be caused by nutritional deficiencies, poorly-fitted dentures, tobacco products, an incorrect brushing or flossing technique, gingivitis and other infections. Infected gums become painfully sensitive and may bleed when you brush or floss. If symptoms persist for more than two weeks, a visit to the dentist is advisable. Here are some home remedies to help soothe the pain until you get an appointment:
Turmeric
Turmeric contains curcumin, which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce pain, swelling and inflammation. In addition, it prevents the spread of bacterial activity that causes several oral problems.
Do this: Make a paste with half a teaspoon of turmeric powder and a little water, and apply on the gums with a clean finger. Leave it on for five minutes, then massage gently and rinse your mouth with warm water.
Black teabags
The tannins contained in tea can help reduce inflammation of the gums. In addition, its antioxidant properties promote good oral health.
Do this: Steep a teabag in boiling water for two to three minutes, remove and allow it to cool to a bearable temperature. Hold it on your gums for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse your mouth with a warm salt-water solution.
Oil pulling
Oil pulling is a tried and tested method to treat inflamed gums or any other dental problems, and promote overall oral health. This age-old Ayurvedic practice helps reduce growth of infection-causing bacteria in the mouth. It even prevents plaque formation and strengthens the gums.
Do this: Put one tablespoon of sesame oil in your mouth and swish it around for 15 to 20 minutes. Spit out the oil and rinse your mouth thoroughly with warm water. Finally, brush your teeth.
Tea tree oil
Tea tree oil contains antibiotic and anti-inflammatory properties that can provide quick relief from irritated and inflamed gums.
Do this: Mix a few drops of tea tree oil in a glass of warm water and use it as a mouthwash twice daily. However, make sure not to swallow the oil as it can cause stomach problems.
Carom seeds
Ajwain or carom seeds contain thymol, which has anesthetic, anti-bacterial and antifungal properties. In addition to these, it is also an anti-inflammatory agent.
Do this: Dry roast the seeds till you get a nice aroma and then grind them to powder form. Add a few drops of mustard oil to make a paste, and apply it onto your gums. Leave it on for 10 minutes and rinse your mouth with warm water.
