SD: While studying to be a lawyer, how did an interest in the glamor/entertainment industry come about?
Maryam: When I was studying law, I never imagined myself as an actor or even harbored such aspirations. It all happened unexpectedly through my sister, who was already involved in the media. When she decided to step back due to her marriage, she introduced me to the opportunity. Upon her suggestion, I attended the audition, and to my surprise, I was selected. Ever since that moment, I’ve been part of this incredible journey.
SD: Did you have to face major concerns when trying to get into modeling?
Maryam: My journey began in the realm of acting. While I dipped my toes into some campaigns, modeling wasn’t quite my forte. It wasn’t a world I delved deeply into.
SD: What are your aspirations as an actress?
Maryam: It’s natural for actors to strive and persevere through challenges. When recognition finally comes, it’s immensely gratifying. It’s like a validation of your efforts, a nod to your character’s authenticity. Despite the hurdles, I remain steadfast, knowing that one day, the recognition will come, acknowledging my journey’s worthiness.
SD: Looking back, do you feel you made the right decisions relating to your career at the right time?
Maryam: I never actively chose this path; it feels like destiny led me here. Yet, I couldn’t be happier. I’ve grown to love my work and cherish every moment in this industry. Acting wasn’t something I initially envisioned for myself, but now, it’s where I truly belong.
Despite the challenges and criticisms that come with the territory, I find immense joy in what I do. Each day brings new experiences, new faces, and new growth opportunities. Even after years in the field, the journey remains exhilarating.
SD: Do you feel nepotism and favoritism exist in the drama industry?
Maryam: Yes, I firmly believe that nepotism and favoritism plague the drama industry. It’s incredibly tough for outsiders like me, without connections or family ties, to break in. Despite my hard work and dedication, my journey has been long and arduous. While I’ve managed to secure projects over the past 5 to 6 years, I still feel the weight of unfair biases at times. Perhaps it’s my talent that keeps me afloat, but there are opportunities I’ve longed for that never materialized due to nepotism and favoritism. It’s a reality that many of us face in this industry.
SD: The one thing you wish to change about the drama industry and why?
Maryam: I strongly believe in the importance of avoiding repetition and saturation in casting, especially when it comes to assigning actors the same types of roles repeatedly. Variety is key, as it allows a diverse range of actors to showcase their creativity and acting prowess through a wide array of characters. Embracing this diversity would undoubtedly invigorate and elevate the industry, providing new actors with opportunities to expand their skills and contribute fresh perspectives to the art of storytelling.
SD: Which role of yours remains your favorite to date and why?
Maryam: I cherish every role I’ve undertaken, knowing the depth of effort I’ve invested. Each character has been a teacher, imparting invaluable lessons along the way. Among them, my portrayal in “Maa Sadqey” holds a special place, marking one of my early ventures. It resonates deeply as I witnessed a young Maryam’s innocence captured on screen. Similarly, “Ab Dekh Khuda Kya Karta Hai” stands out, challenging me to portray complex emotions beyond my expectations. Through these characters, I rediscover the essence of my youth, embodying strength and vulnerability simultaneously. They instilled in me the belief that with determination, the world is mine to conquer.
SD: Any new projects we can look forward to in 2024?
Maryam: I’m thrilled to share that I have two new projects in the pipeline. One is a play, which holds a special place in my heart as it explores unique themes like Ramzan. The project is a pioneer in its own right, setting benchmarks for others to follow. I’m excited to see my character come to life on screen, especially after investing so much time and effort into its wardrobe and character development. The second project delves into a more serious character. It’s truly gratifying to kick off 2024 with such meaningful projects, each offering a different facet of my acting abilities. So far, 2024 has been promising, and I believe it will only lead to greater opportunities inshallah.
SD: Your words of advice to those struggling to make a mark in their respective fields?
Maryam: Embrace gratitude and perseverance as your guiding stars! The journey may seem daunting, even as I voice these words. Yet, I echo them relentlessly: diligence breeds success. Why? Because I live it too. Amidst the challenges, rewards await, perhaps delayed but inevitable. My achievements stand testament to relentless effort, a pursuit since day one. So, remember, amidst the grind, victory beckons to the steadfast.
