From dreaming of a career in the judiciary to becoming a rising star in Pakistan’s fashion industry, Momina Tariq Awan has carved her own path through resilience, ambition, and self-discovery. Born and raised in Lahore, with ancestral roots in Soon Valley, Sargodha, she grew up with big aspirations. Initially, she envisioned herself donning the robes of a Supreme Court judge, but a shift in perspective during her college years led her toward the world of media and fashion. With no industry connections and a family initially opposed to her career choice, Momina’s journey was anything but easy. Determined to succeed on her own terms, she took on multiple jobs alongside her studies, proving her commitment to financial independence and professional growth. Her early experiences in Lahore’s entertainment industry were challenging, but instead of backing down, she pivoted toward modeling in 2020. Her perseverance paid off, and by 2023, she had expanded her expertise into styling, adding another dimension to her career. Now, after six years in the industry, Momina is not just an established model but also a strong advocate for women’s empowerment and artistic growth. She embodies the spirit of self-made success, believing in continuous evolution and embracing new opportunities.
In her conversation with SD, Momina Tariq Awan opens up about the hurdles she overcame, the rapidly evolving entertainment industry in Pakistan, and her aspirations for the future, including a potential leap into acting.
SD: How did you begin your journey as a model in Pakistan, and what was the defining moment that sparked your passion for this career?
Momina Tariq Awan: I started modeling in 2020, and in 2023, I expanded into styling, which I absolutely love. Before modeling, I worked various jobs while studying—not because I had to, but because I’ve always been determined to build my own path. Coming from a middle-class family, I wanted to make my loved ones proud, especially my father. After he passed, I felt an even greater responsibility to succeed. I believe I’m on the right track, and with every step forward, I feel grateful for my journey.
SD: What are some of the challenges you’ve faced in the modeling industry, and how have you managed to overcome them?
Momina Tariq Awan: When I started, I had no references or contacts, and my family didn’t support my decision. I think one of the biggest challenges was navigating an industry I knew nothing about. However, I see things changing now—people are becoming more accepting, and more students are entering the entertainment industry. For me, persistence and adaptability have been key.
SD: In your opinion, what sets Pakistani models apart in the global fashion industry, and how do you plan to represent Pakistan on international platforms?
Momina Tariq Awan: Pakistan has incredible talent, and what sets us apart is our ability to adapt and innovate. I’d describe us as “jugaaru”—we know how to make things work no matter the circumstances. Given the right opportunities, we make the most of them. If I ever get the chance to represent Pakistan internationally, I’d be honored to showcase our talent and resilience.
SD: What role does social media play in your career, and how do you balance your personal life with the professional image you present to the world?
Momina Tariq Awan: Instagram is a huge part of my career—almost 80% of my work comes through it. I treat it like a professional tool, almost like a resume. While I’m mindful of what I share, I always keep it real. My Instagram reflects only a part of me, not my entire self. There’s so much more beyond what people see on social media.
SD: The entertainment industry in Pakistan is growing rapidly. Do you have any intentions of expanding your career into acting in films or dramas? If so, what kind of roles would you be interested in?
Momina Tariq Awan: Acting has always been part of my life—I did plays and theater as a child. I also went through a major physical transformation before entering modeling, which required discipline and commitment. Now, I’m open to acting and looking for roles that are impactful, even if they are small. I don’t want to start as a background character or just as “the heroine’s friend.” I respect all roles, but I want to take on something that challenges me.
SD: There’s a growing focus on women empowerment in the media. How do you think the modeling and entertainment industries can contribute to this movement?
Momina Tariq Awan: I’ve always been passionate about contributing as a woman in society. I believe if more women take on behind-the-scenes roles—like production and direction—it will create a more balanced and comfortable work environment. Our industry is already making an impact; just look at the powerful stories we are telling. Pakistani artists are making their mark globally, and I’m proud to be part of this evolving landscape.
SD: What are your aspirations for the future, both within the modeling industry and beyond? Are there any new projects or ventures you’re excited about?
Momina Tariq Awan: After Ramadan, I plan to visit Karachi to audition for roles. Please pray for me! I’m excited to meet new people and explore opportunities that push me forward in my career. I’m hoping for the best offers that align with my vision for myself.
