In a country where women’s sports often struggle for recognition, Dua Khalid Khan stands as a beacon of resilience and determination. As an international hockey player and digital content creator, she has navigated a path filled with challenges, yet she continues to push boundaries and inspire young athletes. Speaking to Social Diary, Dua opens up about her journey—from an unexpected start in hockey to captaining Karachi and Sindh, despite the lack of professional and governmental support. She also discusses how she uses social media to showcase the struggles and triumphs of female athletes in Pakistan, proving that passion and perseverance can carve a way forward where none seems to exist
SD: Can you take us back to your experience at the Women’s Asia Cup 2022? What were the most defining moments for you?
Dua Khalid Khan: Wearing the green jersey with the Pakistan flag on my chest was a moment of pure pride—a dream come true. It was an experience that solidified my passion for the sport and made me realize the weight of representing my country on an international platform.
SD: What inspired you to pursue hockey professionally, and how has your journey been as a female athlete representing Pakistan internationally?
Dua Khalid Khan: I never planned to play hockey; in many ways, it feels like hockey chose me. One day, my sports teacher took me to the field because of my height, and that’s where it all started. At my very first event, I earned the title of Top Scorer, and that moment sparked something in me. From then on, I developed a deep interest in the game and decided to pursue it seriously. It hasn’t been an easy journey, but the love for the sport keeps me going.
SD: What challenges have you faced in your hockey career, and how have they shaped you as an athlete?
Dua Khalid Khan: Unfortunately, professional and government support for women in sports is almost nonexistent in Pakistan. When I started, the women’s hockey team was under a three-year ban. Despite that, I kept playing, training, and pushing myself without waiting for external validation or support. These struggles made me stronger, more resilient, and more determined. Since 2021, I have proudly captained both Karachi and Sindh, proving that dedication and perseverance can break barriers.
SD: How do you balance the demands of being an international hockey player with content creation?
Dua Khalid Khan: I believe balance isn’t a challenge when you’re truly passionate about what you do. If external support is lacking, you have to be your own biggest advocate. Content creation allows me to showcase my journey, struggles, and achievements, ensuring my efforts are recognized and inspiring others to pursue their dreams, regardless of the odds.
SD: What inspired you to step into content creation, and how do you merge it with your sports career?
Dua Khalid Khan: Being an athlete doesn’t mean you can’t have other aspirations. I’ve always enjoyed connecting with people, sharing my journey, and being recognized for my work. Social media gives me the platform to tell my story—raw, real, and unfiltered. I want people to see what goes on behind the scenes, the hard work, the passion, and the challenges that athletes face.
SD: What kind of content do you enjoy creating the most, and how do you engage with your audience?
Dua Khalid Khan: I love creating hockey-related content—whether it’s playing videos, training sessions, or behind-the-scenes glimpses of the dedication it takes to be an athlete. I also used to vlog to shed light on the reality of hockey in Pakistan and the struggles of hardworking players. Right now, I’m active on platforms like Instagram and Facebook, where I engage with my audience and share my journey.
SD: Do you think social media helps in changing the perception of female athletes? How do you use your platform for this purpose?
Dua Khalid Khan: Absolutely! In today’s world, if you don’t use your voice, no one will speak for you. Social media gives us the power to tell our own stories, change perceptions, and demand recognition. I use my platform to highlight my achievements, my struggles, and the need for greater support for female athletes in Pakistan.
SD: What is one misconception about female athletes in Pakistan that you would like to change?
Dua Khalid Khan: The biggest misconception is that female athletes are not serious contenders or worthy of investment. The system places us at the lowest priority, making it difficult to access the same opportunities as our male counterparts. But we are just as passionate, just as hardworking, and just as deserving of recognition.
SD: What advice would you give to young girls who aspire to become professional athletes but face societal and financial barriers?
Dua Khalid Khan: Hard work is everything. Believe in yourself, develop resilience, and never let anyone tell you that you can’t achieve something. Convince yourself first, then convince the world. No matter the challenges—lack of support, financial barriers, or societal pressures—if you keep pushing forward, doors will open.
SD: What are your future goals, both as a hockey player and a content creator?
Dua Khalid Khan: I plan to continue both till the very end. My goal is to not only excel as a hockey player but also to inspire others and create opportunities for future female athletes. I want to leave a legacy that proves that with determination and passion, nothing is impossible.
