Eccentric, energetic, and highly motivated, anchor, actress and model, Mehwish Weqar is committed to her goals and is not going to let any negative experiences along the way dim her energy to shine in her own path. Speaking to Social Diary, she shared how it all began- from a 14-year-old debuting in a television commercial to one of the well-known faces in the television industry, this is one talented individual who continues to explore and stand by her choices. Read on to know more:
SD: How did you venture into the field of modeling?
Mehwish: It was completely unexpected. I remember I was only 14 years old, having dinner with my family at a Pakistani restaurant and a man who ran an advertising company asked my parents if I would be allowed to work in a television commercial, after that I did about 7 TVCs and from there I was approached for modeling for a fashion show. Afterward, I did a few photoshoots for beauty salons.
SD: As an anchor person, what was the major setback you had to overcome?
Mehwish: The major setback I had to overcome was to stay neutral. You can’t let your own emotions and perspective take over. Also, you have to be very fast in creating questions in your mind while having a conversation with your guest. Also, know that some people are very nervous and excited when they are on television sharing their journey so give them their time when they are answering questions.
SD: Do you feel your path to self-discovery was something you had to fight for or was it a natural progression?
Mehwish: As you are growing up, you meet different people; you face different life situations which are completely new to you, and these later on turn into life lessons and help you with your self-discovery. Eventually, your experiences mold your personality. I always say “let life teach you”.
SD: Who do you look up to as a source of inspiration?
Mehwish: For me, sources of inspiration are living legends. I watch their journey and struggles from the beginning to understand no one becomes successful overnight. Another source of inspiration is consistency in doing the work you are in. Don’t just give up yet. It takes time but it shall happen.
SD: What remains the most fulfilling aspect of your show “Spotlight with Mehwish Weqar”
Mehwish: Being connected to a live audience. It’s something I would like to add as an aspect maybe in the future.
SD: How do you feel your gig as an anchor allows you to connect with your guests?
Mehwish: Since my show is entertainment-based, we have many artists in Toronto who like to connect and share their journeys on television. Concerts, movie premieres, and community shows – all are promoted on my show as long as it’s entertainment.
SD: Any particular person you wish to invite to your show and why?
Mehwish: I have interviewed many celebrities and politicians but this one particular person would be the pride of Pakistan- Atif Aslam. I’m his forever fan girl.
SD: As a beauty ambassador, what are the three major misconceptions about beauty you wish to remove?
Mehwish: I wish I could say more than three but the top one that needs to be removed is body shaming. I think all women are beautiful and should be accepted as it is. There is a new trend of changing the way your facial features are. We are made to believe that having big lips, a v-shaped chin, and lifted cheeks is how a girl’s face should look like. This needs to be voiced against. Girls should be happy with the features they have naturally. Be your own fashion statement- not everyone can afford costly designer bags and clothes. Wear what you like and most importantly, don’t try to impress others by depressing yourself.
SD: What are the three beauty hacks that have changed your life?
Mehwish: Remaining hydrated with lots of water intake, as well as having a good night’s rest is really important. Make sure you are working out at least 3 times a week. It also helps in relieving stress and giving you better skin.
SD: Would you ever consider venturing into acting anytime soon?
Mehwish: I have already done acting in a PTV serial as a guest appearance. But yes I would definitely like to get into it more.
SD: How do you wish to empower women to pursue their dreams?
Mehwish: Focus, focus and focus. If you lose focus on your goals, you will get pushed back. Everything can wait but achieving goals must be the priority as they take the longest to achieve.
SD: Is 2023 shaping up to be as you hoped it would?
Mehwish: So far, it’s been amazing. There is so much I have done and achieved in just three months. I’m hoping for this year to be more successful and peaceful!
