Massive Quake Rocks Northern Japan
A massive quake rocking northern Japan late Monday night left communities shaken, roads damaged, and thousands without power as freezing temperatures gripped the region. The powerful magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck off the coast of Aomori, triggering tsunami alerts and sending residents rushing to safety.
Impact and Immediate Aftermath
Authorities confirmed at least 30 people injured, including one seriously in Hokkaido. The violent shaking tore open roads, cracked pavements, and caused a vehicle to fall into a roadside cavity. Emergency crews also tackled a confirmed house fire, initially one of several reported.
More than 28,000 residents were urged to evacuate, and temporary shelters rapidly filled up. While 2,700 homes initially lost electricity, power was restored to nearly all by Tuesday morning.
Tsunami Alerts and Transport Disruptions
Early warnings predicted waves up to three meters, though the highest recorded reached 70 centimeters before advisories were lifted. Shinkansen services were temporarily halted while engineers inspected tracks.
Ongoing Caution After Northern Japan Quake
Officials urge residents to remain vigilant throughout the week, as the chance of additional powerful tremors remains elevated. For many, the quake revived memories of Japan’s past mega-disasters, underscoring the country’s ongoing seismic vulnerability.
