‘Jus Soli’ – Administrative policy
Under the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, anyone born on U.S. soil is granted citizenship. A principle known as “jus soli.” Trump’s executive order challenged this longstanding interpretation. Hence proposing a significant shift in how citizenship is granted. The order was seen as a response to concerns about birthright citizenship. More so with Trump and his administration arguing that it incentivized illegal immigration and strained public resources.
The executive order faced significant legal challenges and criticism from various advocacy groups. From legal experts to political opponents. Critics argued that the move was unconstitutional and undermined the fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution. They also highlighted the potential consequences for children born to undocumented immigrants. Hence who would be denied citizenship and the associated rights and privileges.
Overall, Trump’s executive order to end automatic citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants. Since temporary visa holders was a contentious issue that sparked debate over immigration policy. Hence the constitutional rights, and the future of citizenship in the United States.
