Pakistan is currently facing a severe heatwave, with daytime temperatures expected to remain dangerously high through the weekend. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), a dominant high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere is driving the heat, with several regions experiencing temperatures well above normal.
Northern and Central Pakistan to Remain 5–7°C Above Normal
Areas including Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan will continue to face extreme heat, with temperatures forecasted to rise 5 to 7°C above seasonal averages until May 19. These unusually high temperatures are raising public health concerns, especially in urban centres.
Southern Regions Enduring Prolonged Heat Stress
In southern areas like Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan, temperatures are projected to remain 4 to 6°C above normal through May 20. Cities such as Dadu and Turbat have already recorded highs of 48°C, while some interior districts may exceed 50°C in the coming days.
Take Heat Precautions, Especially for At-Risk Groups
Authorities urge residents to stay indoors during peak hours, drink water frequently, and check on people at higher risk—such as children, outdoor workers, and older adults.
