Embarking on a journey toward your dreams, fueled by unwavering passion, is a testament to conquering challenges that inevitably arise. In the dynamic realm of Pakistan’s modeling industry, one name stands out – Celina Arif, a formidable force making waves with her exceptional talent. In an exclusive conversation with us, she opens up about the evolving landscape of modeling and reveals why she might be holding off on venturing into the captivating world of acting anytime soon.
SD: When was the first instance you felt you wanted to pursue modeling
Celina: Honestly, modeling wasn’t my priority, I was pursuing finance. Covid hit and that’s when I started working as a model. Was just doing it for fun initially but as work grew I started enjoying it more and realized God’s plan was better than what I had planned for myself. Went with the flow of life and it worked out.
SD: The biggest hindrance you faced when stepping into this field?
Celina: I had to deal with a lot of mean people that never took me seriously. Eventually, you do make a place because iAt’s your hard work that gets you there but it was difficult making friends initially since it’s so competitive and I had no help.
SD: Do you feel trolling on social media can be combated positively?
Celina: Initially yes it did bother me but now It doesn’t because everyone’s entitled to their own opinion. I know who I am and that’s enough for me.
SD: What remains your favorite shoot to date?
Celina: My favorite shoot was Coco by Zara Shahjahan. I wasn’t doing very well mentally in life during that period and this shoot was an opportunity to spend some time in nature. The entire shoot was so well thought out and executed. Just what I needed.
SD: How do you create a balance between your professional and personal preferences?
Celina: I keep my professional life far away from my personal preferences. I’m not the same person outside work and I prefer it that way. Work is work.
SD: Would you ever consider venturing into acting?
Celina: I’ve thought about it. Right now I enjoy what I do. Will see where life has to take me InshaAllah. Not my priority at the moment.
SD: What does a regular day in the life of Celina look like?
Celina: My life is pretty spontaneous. When I’m working I have a set routine so a day would be waking up, running errands, getting work done, coming home, doing chores, speaking to family, reading, and going back to bed in time. I tend to take breaks from work in the middle for friends and family. During those breaks, my days are very unpredictable
SD: Do you feel our modeling industry is progressing in the right direction?
Celina: We’ve come so far. First female photographer to win an award. We have our fellow model as the first Miss Universe Pakistan. Brands like Rastah have taken us international now. There’s a lot of talent and creativity left unexplored but we’re most definitely heading in the right direction.
SD: If there’s one thing you can change about this field, what would it be?
Celina: I sometimes feel like due to economic struggles and social media trends, work has become overly commercial now. Maybe we could bring back editorials and more creative shoots. Also, we could be more inclusive in terms of color and size. I feel like that’s where the Pakistani fashion industry is lacking the most. Our target audience needs representation and I think it’s time we start setting an example. Collaborations with international designers would also be great to see in the near future. I’d love to see our models working for brands in other countries.
