SD: What inspired you to pursue a career in journalism and broadcasting?
Sonya: I would prefer to phrase this as ‘who’ inspired me. While there are undoubtedly many influential journalists in the field today, Tauseeq Haider played a pivotal role in shaping my career, particularly guiding me towards anchoring and hosting. He has been a significant role model for me.
SD: Can you share a pivotal moment in your career that significantly shaped your professional journey?
Sonya: I can’t pinpoint a specific moment, but my passion has been evident from the beginning. I’ve always been eager to learn and focused on developing my talents. For example, at ATV, I launched a program that aired both in the mornings and evenings, where I honed my skills and explored my full range of talents. Similarly, working across various channels has exposed me to different facets of the industry, allowing me to continually improve and grow.
SD: What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your career, and how did you overcome them?
Sonya: Everyone encounters challenges in life, whether personal or professional. I entered this field through my own efforts, but in media, networking is crucial. The reality is that without knowing influential people, opportunities can be hard to come by, as I experienced for a while. Fortunately, I’ve been blessed with supportive friends. My first producer, a woman, stood by me through various assignments and referred me often, which is uncommon. Despite facing these challenges, I draw strength from Allah and believe in my skills. I’ve made a commitment to create opportunities for myself based on my own merit.
SD: How do you manage the stress and pressures of your job?
Sonya: I exercise regularly, and for me, it’s more than just physical activity—it’s my primary stress relief. Working out not only keeps me physically fit but also mentally sharp. I dedicate time to exercise every day, even on Sundays when the gym is closed; I choose to walk instead. I also maintain a disciplined approach to nutrition, avoiding cheat meals. This routine has been instrumental in managing my stress effectively. Finding an activity that supports your well-being is crucial; for me, I channel my challenges into my workouts while keeping my problems to myself.
SD: What hobbies or activities do you enjoy outside of work that helps you maintain balance?
Sonya: I am deeply passionate about my work; I’m a dedicated workaholic who also enjoys working out. Meeting new people brings me joy, and I find solace in painting—I’ve even adorned my walls with my creations. Writing is another passion of mine. Overall, I feel fulfilled and alive, fully embracing and enjoying every aspect of my life.
SD: What is the most valuable piece of advice you’ve received in your career, and how has it influenced you?
Sonya: I once participated in a Ramzan show with Reema jee, where I observed her remarkable composure in challenging situations that might unsettle others. Her humility and down-to-earth demeanor despite her high position left a lasting impression on me. Her advice to remain composed has become a part of my personality. I’ve learned that when I show respect, it often reciprocates. I believe in the principle of karma—what you give out, you receive in return. Self-love and maintaining a positive focus are key to navigating life’s challenges.
SD: Can you tell us about a story or broadcast that you are particularly proud of?
Sonya: There have been a few significant moments in my career during live shows. One memorable occasion was during a flood donation event that I hosted for 3.5 hours and we successfully collected 2 crore rupees. Another notable event was when I hosted a live press conference for the Celebrity Cricket League, where I was the only female host among celebrities, anchors, and sports personalities. During this event, Qamar Sb., the writer of “Meray Paas Tum Ho,” complimented me saying, “You speak more eloquently than you look,” which filled me with pride and honor.
SD: How do you handle criticism and negative feedback, especially in the public eye?
Sonya: I am deeply content with my inner life, and I pay little heed to what others may think of me because they don’t truly know me. However, if someone who knows me says something negative, it affects me, as their opinion matters. I understand that individuals who criticize often do so from their own frustrations and personal issues, which they vent on social media. I choose to avoid engaging with such negativity.
SD: What role do you believe journalism plays in the development of Pakistani society?
Sonya: Journalism and media in Pakistan play a pivotal role, with well-educated journalists offering poignant perspectives. They critically analyze Pakistani politicians, reflecting the thoughts and critiques essential for Pakistan’s development. This is why only a few journalists hold such significant influence.
SD: Have you ever considered pursuing acting?
Sonya: I receive offers for modeling and acting, but I’m not inclined to pursue them right now. Handling multiple responsibilities simultaneously isn’t something I feel equipped for at the moment. However, if a particularly compelling role in a drama or movie comes my way, I might consider it. For now, my focus is on pursuing my own set goals.
SD: Do you think there are enough opportunities for women in media in Pakistan? What can be done to improve this?
Sonya: Unfortunately, there’s a lack of support among women for each other. Talented women often get overlooked, and connections sometimes overshadow raw skill. While progress is being made, there’s still much that needs to be addressed and improved. I remain hopeful that things will continue to improve, and that talent will eventually shine through despite these challenges.
SD: What advice would you give to aspiring journalists about maintaining integrity in their work?
Sonya: In the profession you’ve chosen, passion and integrity are crucial for achieving your goals. Self-respect is paramount; maintain it at all times. Respect your profession and carry yourself with the awareness that you are representing Pakistan on a global scale. This mindset will propel you forward with purpose and pride.
