SD: Your work spans styling, makeup, and special effects. How do you balance these diverse roles, and which do you find most creatively fulfilling?
Rida: Balancing styling, makeup, and SFX comes down to careful planning and knowing when each element drives the look. Styling sets the tone, while makeup and SFX bring depth and transformation. I find the most creative fulfillment in combining all three to craft a complete, immersive character.
SD: What are some of the biggest trends in celebrity styling and makeup in Pakistan right now, and how do you incorporate these trends into your work?
Rida: In Pakistan, people can wear literally anything off the racks. Celebrity styling trends mix modernized traditional wear with bold jewel tones, while makeup emphasizes soft glam and dewy skin. I research looks by blending classic elements with fresh, contemporary details for a balanced, elegant look that stands out. I don’t want my artist to be just another artist. I like setting their own individual style.
SD: Can you share a memorable project where your special effects work significantly transformed the overall look and feel of a production?
Rida: I’ve worked on many unforgettable projects, but the most entertaining have been my ISPR videos, where I had the creative freedom to explore SFX. Recently, I did a music video that allowed me to incorporate a lot of my artistic vision, and I’m really excited for its release.
SD: How do you approach creating a unique style or look for a celebrity? Do you start with the person’s personality, the character they’re portraying, or something else entirely?
Rida: I start by understanding the celebrity’s personality and the image they want to convey. Then, I tailor the look to the event or role, blending their style with elements that enhance the narrative and make a strong visual impact.
SD: What challenges do you face when working with high-profile clients, and how do you ensure their vision aligns with your expertise?
Rida: The main challenge I face is balancing client expectations with my expertise while managing tight timelines. I ensure alignment through clear communication, carefully listening to their vision, and offering expert advice to refine their desired look. My selective approach to the projects I take on also helps maintain the integrity of my creative vision.
SD: How has the rise of social media and digital platforms influenced your approach to styling and makeup for celebrities?
Rida: Social media has shifted the focus to instant, eye-catching visuals. I now consider how quickly a look can capture attention and perform well in digital formats. This means creating styles that not only look great in person but also make a strong impression online. At the end of the day, it’s all about aesthetics.
SD: Your favorite celebrity to have styled till date and why?
Rida: My favorite celebrity to style is Imran Ashraf because his openness to experimenting with bold looks and unique concepts allowed for creative freedom. His willingness to push boundaries and embrace new ideas made each project exciting and rewarding and made you want to do even better next time.
SD: Special effects makeup can be quite complex. What’s one of the most intricate SFX looks you’ve created, and what techniques did you use to achieve it?
Rida: One of the most intricate SFX looks I created involved a full-face prosthetic transformation for a fantasy character. I used techniques such as detailed sculpting, mold-making, and painting to ensure realistic texture and depth. Airbrushing and layering different pigments helped achieve a lifelike finish.
SD: What advice would you give to aspiring stylists and makeup artists who want to break into the celebrity industry in Pakistan?
Rida: Aspiring stylists and makeup artists should prioritize developing a distinctive style. Just be yourself and you’ll see wonders if you love what you do.
SD: Looking ahead, are there any emerging trends or innovations in the styling or makeup industry that you’re particularly excited about?
Rida: I’m always rooting for baggy fashion trends and minimal makeup for women, and I hope these trends remain in style indefinitely.
