SD: How has your transition from being part of the duo Bonafide to a solo artist influenced your musical style and creative process?
Maz: Being part of Bonafide, we had to balance two different artistic visions, which meant compromising at times. As a solo artist, I have full creative control and freedom. This allows me to explore new genres, experiment with different sounds, and express my personal experiences and emotions more authentically. My music now reflects a more personal and introspective narrative, something that’s uniquely my own. Also, being a songwriter and a composer, the creative process has changed altogether. In a duo, songwriting and production were collaborative efforts, often requiring alignment and compromise. As a solo artist, I have the liberty to follow my instincts and make decisions that align with my creative vision.
SD: What challenges did you face while establishing yourself as a solo artist, and how did you overcome them?
Maz: Creating a new musical identity required consistent music releases and engaging with fans on social media. Managing my career independently was difficult, so I built a support team and adopted strategic planning. Being a solo artist wasn’t daunting. It was more exciting and challenging. Overcoming self-doubt and fear of failure involved embracing a positive mindset, setting achievable goals, and celebrating small victories.
SD: Can you elaborate on the experience of working with Imran Kazmi and Minal Khan for the “Wifey Type” music video?
Maz: I remember I was at the former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s house in Bani Gala when his ex-wife Reham Khan introduced me to Imran Kazmi. We got on immediately and I wanted to work with him for my video shoot. Working with Imran Kazmi and Minal Khan on the “Wifey Type” music video was a fantastic experience that brought together exceptional talent and creativity. Imran Kazmi’s direction brought a unique vision to the project, blending his keen eye for detail with a deep understanding of storytelling. His ability to translate the song’s vibe into compelling visuals made the entire process seamless and enjoyable. Minal Khan’s presence added a new dimension to the video. Her professionalism and talent as an actress helped bring the story to life, making each scene more engaging and relatable.
SD: How do you ensure each of your music videos offers something unique and fresh to your audience?
Maz: I focus on storytelling, developing distinct narratives that align with each song. I prioritize visual innovation, experimenting with different filming techniques, locations, and aesthetics. Collaborating with diverse directors and creative teams brings new ideas and perspectives. Lastly, I stay attuned to my audience’s preferences and feedback, allowing me to push boundaries while delivering content that resonates with them.
